Szeged, the biggest city of South-East Hungary was founded at the confluence of Tisza and Maros rivers. After the devastating inundation of 1879 it was rebuilt with international aid. Hence the modern layout of boulevards and avenues modelled on Paris. The Main Square, named after Széchenyi, with its perfectly arranged paths lined with huge trees, has been converted into a real park, becoming the most impressive main square in Hungary.
The square in front of the two-towered, Romanesque style cathedral, a feature of Szeged, serves as a scene for the traditional Summer Open Air Festival arranged every year.
Szeged is the town of scholars. Its schools comprehend all stages of education.
