Esztergom

Esztergom, of much importance as a ford on the Danube in former times, gives access to Kisalföld, the Small Hungarian Plain. Esztergom had been regal seat for centuries. The Romanesque style royal palace dug up by the archeologists at one side of the castle hill, the Bakócz Chapel and the Palace of Vak Bottyán witness the former grandeur. Esztergom's Christian Museum, besides masterpieces by European painters, has the richest collection of medieval Hungarian painting. In the library numerous codices are kept, the treasury has precious works of art.

With its cathedral Esztergom is an ecclesiastical centre, the focus of Hungarian Catholic life. The cathedral is the country's most impressive church. Many of the town's Baroque houses are declared historic monuments.
