Eger lies at the foot of the Bükk mountain, in the valley of the Eger brook. It was here, that, in 1522, the walls of the famous Eger castle halted the enormous Ottoman army. The defenders were commanded by István Dobó, the brave castellan. Now, the town's largest square is named after him. A statue of him stands there in the middle of the square, facing the castle, the scene of his heroic deed.
Climbing up the minaret, a wonderful wiew, just like in a picture book, unfolds before us: a set of harmoniously arranged 18th century baroque buildings, an ensemble being on par with that of Koszeg. The Classicist style Basilica is one of the counrty's nicest, rivalled only by that in Esztergom.
Eger has always been famous for its colleges and baths. The Teacher-training College, having even an observatory, and the new swimming pool, built in vernacular style and fed by medicinal springs show how in Eger traditions continue.
The vineyards and the fruit trees on the slopes of volcanic soil crop well. The region is famous for its red wines, mellowed in wine-vaults.
